Jukebox Vagueblogging
May. 13th, 2019 12:09 amI'm going to ramble on about this here because it seems like the kind of thing people use Dreamwidth for - maybe I'll cross-post it to Tumblr later if I feel like it.
Anyway, I've been working a lot on my Jukebox Exchange assignment, and I'm just...loving it? Like, I remember feeling similar last year, but it's just so nice to be able to mess around with worldbuilding and original characters. Plot is still a bit tricky - last year I actually changed the ending at the last minute, because the ending I had planned was just too sad and it took me that long to figure out how to make it better. But plot is tricky with fanfic too, so it's not like it's all that different.
I don't know, maybe I'm feeling sappy because I'm writing some lovable idiots and they're actually my lovable idiots instead of lovable idiots who I'm borrowing. But it is so nice to be able to decide things like "everyone is a lady because WHY NOT" or "nobody dies, in fact we are un-burying our gays in this one". (Note: not a spoiler for this year's story, both of those things apply to last year's jukebox). Obviously it's possible to make those decisions in fanfic too, but I always feel like I have to write my way around canon.
And I'm not saying I don't still love writing fanfic - part of the reason this story is taking so long is that I keep bouncing between it and my HogwartSSSS AU (speaking of lovable idiots). But I do think I need to make more efforts to work on original fiction again. It's harder without a deadline, but it's clear that I can do it, and that I can actually finish things when I set my mind to it. Maybe I should look at the prompts from my own jukebox request and see if there's one I want to pursue for myself once this is done. (Maybe I should put the ideas out and see what interests people, because as much as I'd be writing it for myself, I am fully aware that I am a glutton for positive feedback and I like it when people get excited to read my stuff.)
In any case, I can't wait to share this story once it's done. It'll be a while before I can actually shove it in people's faces - the deadline is Saturday, and after that there'll be more waiting for the collection to open and for author reveals. But rest assured, when it's public I'll be waving it around saying "read this, please read this and enjoy my lovable idiots."
